Visitor

We had a special visitor on Wednesday night, October 2, 2013. His name was George Huffman. He is from Michigan and was passing through Winfield on his way to Florida. His ministry is on the importance of getting scripture into your heart. He gave Deuteronomy 6:4-9 as reference for why we should learn scripture:

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates."

He amazed us by quoting the entire book of Philippians! Not only can he quote the entire book of Philippians, he has memorized and can quote 22 books of the Bible!

He gave us some tips for memorizing scripture:

1. You must have the desire. In order to memorize scripture, you first must have the desire to memorize it.

2. Stay disciplined. In order to memorize scripture, you have to work at it. He quoted 2 Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." pointing out the word "workman" showing that it takes work to learn scripture.

3. Ask for help from the Holy Spirit. Anytime we read or study the Bible, we should ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to learn the scripture and to gain understanding.

4. Take it one word at a time. He said to learn one word at a time instead of trying to learn a whole passage at a time.

5. Use it or lose it. After you memorize scripture, quote it often. If you do not quote it to yourself and to others often, you will lose it. He gave us an example of his memorizing the book of Revelation. He could quote it but after a while of not quoting it in churches, he lost it so he is having to re-memorize the book. He says it will take him a year to re-memorize the entire book. He says he quotes entire books to himself while driving along the highway to keep it.

Brother Huffman is pastor of Little Log Cabin Church in Michigan. He shared with us his hardships of dealing with abuse as a child, and how the Lord delivered him from drug abuse. We pray for his safe travels and for the Lord to bless his ministry.
