Success at WCFC

A great big "thank you" to everybody who pitched in and helped make Saturday a huge success. The Angel Food delivery went well and there were alot of little Girl Scouts and their troop leaders who are so special to the church when they come to help. Carol is already preparing for next month's menu and orders, and since they will be away, the rest of us will have to try to fill her shoes while she and Rick enjoy a little vacation time. Several of the "Sisters of the Heart" who belong to another church came out to support the work here. What a precious bunch of women! We are looking into doing more in the way of volunteer sewing, and one of the Scout leaders said she could help us get involved with one of the big hospitals in Birmingham. Please pray that the Lord will open doors for this outreach effort.

The Bake Sale was a great fund-raiser, making over $130 and every cake, pie and cookie crumb was purchased and devoured!!! What good cooks we have who are willing to provide the sweets and then bring them to the sale. Saturday's weather was excellent also, thankfully. This money is going toward the Youth Ministries.

Sunday night we called off the night service and filled the church van to go to the First Nazarene Church in Jasper for their annual Easter Drama. It was awesome. You really missed a blessing if you missed this one. Ronnie Cockrell's sister, Pat Waldo and her granddaughter, Amanda, were in the choir. Ronnie drove the van and we had 12 who went. Pat is one of the "Sisters of the Heart" and she has been teaching us to crochet.

Next Sunday is Easter and the church is planning a dinner after the service. Please come and bring as many people as you can get to be here for that. Remember to bring eggs-boiled eggs or the plastic ones-there will be an Easter Egg Hunt with some neat prizes and surprizes.

Sounds exciting for all the "young at heart".

History of Aprons

The Ladies' Ministries/Sisters of the Heart group have been working on some different sewing projects, one of them being making aprons-just like Grandma used to wear. Aprons are making a big come-back and it seems you see them and the patterns for them everywhere. We all have memories of aprons some special place back in our childhood.

Mark and Betty McDonald sent this little article to be put on the WCFC blog. Enjoy as you recall simpler days.

History of Aprons
These days kids don't know what an apron even is!!!

The principle purpose of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for taking the hot pans out of the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears and occasionally it cleaned out dirty ears.

When Grandma rocked us to sleep, she'd cover us with it and we felt so snug when wrapped up in her apron.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished by the warming oven.

When company came, these aprons were ideal for hiding shy kids.

When the weather was cold, Grandma's apron kept her arms warm.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over a wood stove. Wood chips and kindling was brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, the apron carried in all sorts of vegetables. After the peas were shelled, the apron took out the hulls.

In the Fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen off the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture could be dusted in a few seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma would walk out onto the porch, wave that big apron, and the men knew it was time to come in to eat.

It will be a long time until someone invents something that can replace that old-timey apron that served so many purposes.

MARCH MADNESS

The church is due for makeover-a day of mowing and cleaning and some TLC. We need everyone who can and will to come out and help. Even work can be fun when we all work together. There is going to be a day set aside for just that, with everybody helping out. Please keep this in mind and think about what you could do to contribute.

The Angelfood Ministries Deadline to order is March 13-see Carol

The Angelfood Distribution Date is March 27 and the pickup time is re-set 9 to 11 AM. That same day we will sponsor a Bake Sale. The benefits will go to fund Children's Ministries' Outdoor Project!! More on this exciting plan later!

Fellowship Hall-we want to paint the doors, work on the outdoor light and the entrance-see Neal Sandlin

Angels at Work

As you may know, the Angelfood distribution was last Saturday. The order for boxes was doubled this month from last, which increased the volume as well as the work required. We really owe Carol and Rick Barton a great thank you- THANK YOU!!!!!- for the outstanding job they are doing, as well as everyone who pitched in to help. You really have no idea what is involved in this ministry until you jump in and get into it all. So very many of our church family were there to lend a helping hand and we are praying this food ministry will impact the community in a way that's pleasing to the Lord. The Girl Scout troops have been there and we are so thankful to them and the moms for making a difference in the world because of the good work they do. Our Ladies' Ministry set up a table with a few items that we have been working on, and we are in the process of making some things for the inside of the church. If you want to help, feel free to join in. You will be welcome and needed. Neal and Sondra are giving a huge picture for the front wall behind the pulpit. It's the Last Supper. Neal has built a frame for the painting and we can't wait to see how much better the church will look.

There is a great need for volunteers to help out with the cleaning and upkeep of the building. Always there is need for supplies such as:

White paint, paint pans, and brushes
Cakes, pies, cookies, candy, etc. for the upcoming Bake Sale-more information on that later.
Light fixture
Paper products, paper towels, bath tissue, paper plates, cups, forks, spoons and knives, supplies for the kitchen and bathrooms
Trash cans and trash bags that fit properly
Cleaning supplies, air freshener
Coffee, filters, sugar, creamer, Koolaid, teabags
Mop, broom, vacuum cleaner supplies, dusters
Table cloths, 72" round covers

There were several people who were back in church Sunday and have been missed so much!! Debra Banta and David are home again and also, Haley Moore was able to be present, as well as Linda and Katrina Franks! Praise the Lord!
